What A Hero Is Essay

What Does It Mean to Be a Hero?

We often talk about fictional characters with supernatural powers as heroes. Soldiers, firefighters, volunteers are also often called the heroes. But what really is a hero? Does heroism always require the physical strength, or are there other important qualities that define a hero? According to a Meriam-Webster Dictionary, a hero is a person who is greatly admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities. (1) Does that mean that people with outstanding personal qualities who can motivate us and change the world can be considered the heroes? Probably, yes.

A hero can be anyone we look up to. Heroes can be real or fictional, they can be someone we see every day or have met once in our life, they can be male or female, children or grown-ups. When we were young, our heroes were Robin Hood, Batman, Spiderman. Then our moms, dads, grandparents, sisters and brothers and even our pets became our heroes. We become older, more experienced, and our perceptions about heroes change. We start to think that we are surrounded by heroes, in fact. Single mothers who deny themselves food and clothes to send their children to college, couples who adopt children, a person who donates his kidney to save the brother, children who put their careers on hold to take care of their sick parents, people who sacrifice their dreams to support the loved ones, cancer patients who continue to fight for their life – these are the examples of heroes around us. Hero

The word hero means someone who has made great achievements in life and thus admired by people. It is a word that is used so much in the modern times. When one thinks of the word hero, what comes to my mind is someone who has gone out of his her ways to accomplish certain missions, tasks or challenges in life successfully. Some of the general admirable qualities that one can possess are bravery, courageousness, trustworthiness and reliability. A hero is not necessarily someone you know personally. It could be a celebrity, freedom fighter, footballer or even an athlete. These individuals possess special attributes that many people admire. When children are asked what they want to be when they grow up they could say they want to be a great athlete and possibly name one of the great athletes in history today. In such a situation, the athlete is a hero and also a role model because you look upon him to shape up your passion and talent.

If we look back in history, heroes are people who have great achievements. There are several factors that lead to one being heroic. In most cases, it is the way someone behaves or acts in certain circumstances. In situations like war, they are the people who have gone out of their way despite major obstacles and made great sacrifices for their country. Nelson Mandela is a great example of an individual who fought tirelessly for freedom and democracy in his country. Nelson Mandela is now a hero and role model to many upcoming leaders and those already in leadership positions.

Children also have superheroes that they look up to. Superheroes are known to have superficial powers like flying. Super man and batman are examples of superheroes. Superheroes are admired because they have extraordinary powers like flying, bravery and strength. Children also look up to their parents as heroes. Parents go along away to make sure their children are comfortable, secure and happy. They sacrifice their time and love for their children. Without parents, children miss parental care hence they sometimes suffer neglect, abuse and exploitation. Parent’s professions influence family member’s career decisions. It is not unusual to find children taking up their parents professions. Professions like medicine and teaching often run in the family.
